Mixed-methods study protocol for an evaluation of the mental health transition navigator model in child and adolescent mental health services: the Navigator Evaluation Advancing Transitions (NEAT) study

Introduction Transition from child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) to community or adult (AMHS) is a highly problematic systems hurdle, especially for transition-aged youth. A planned purposeful transition process often non-existent experienced negatively by youth their caregivers. Stakeholders, including caregivers, have demanded interventions support more effective transitions, such navigator. The navigator model uses facilitate complex transitions acute care CAMHS AMHS. However, despite the widespread implementation of this model, there has been no evaluation programme, hindering its scalability. This paper describes study protocol Navigator Evaluation Advancing Transitions that aims collaborate with patients, caregivers clinicians in model. Methods analysis pre post mixed-method will be conducted, using Triple Aim Framework, evaluate We recruit participants one large tertiary two hospitals Toronto, Canada. For quantitative portion study, we sample 45 (15 at each site), aged 16–18, baseline (referral navigator) (T1) 6 months (T2). Youth caregiver complete set standardised measures assess health, service utilisation, satisfaction outcomes. qualitative semistructured interviews conducted (T2) youth, better understand experience Ethics dissemination Research Board (REB) approval obtained lead research sites, University Toronto Hospital Sick Children. results reported peer-reviewed publications, webinars conferences all relevant stakeholders.
